Roll-Off Dumpster Sizes for Murfreesboro Projects, 10 to 40 Yards

Picking a size is mostly about not paying twice: once for a container too small, and again for the second haul. These are the five sizes local companies carry, with the jobs each one actually fits.

What "roll-off" means

A roll-off is an open-top steel container that a truck winches onto a tilting bed and rolls off onto the ground. That is the difference from the lidded front-load bins behind shops and apartment blocks, which are emptied on a schedule and stay put. A roll-off comes for a job and leaves when the job is done. The width is close to eight feet on every size; the length and the wall height are what change.

The five sizes

10 yard

Roughly 12 feet long with walls around three and a half feet high. Holds about three or four pickup loads. Right for a single-room clear-out, a small bathroom, a deck of a few hundred square feet, or heavy material like concrete, brick or soil, which most companies want kept to this size. Low walls make it the easiest to load by hand.

15 yard

Around 16 feet long with walls a little over four feet. A garage clean-out, a basement, a small kitchen, or a single-layer roof on a small ranch house. Not every Murfreesboro company carries a 15, so some quotes will jump from 10 to 20.

20 yard

Around 22 feet long with walls about four and a half feet. The size most homeowners here end up with: a kitchen remodel, a full-house clear-out before a move, flooring throughout a house, or a roof tear-off of 25 to 30 squares in one layer. It has its own page because it is the default answer.

30 yard

The same footprint as a 20 with walls around six feet. A whole-floor gut, an addition, siding off a large house, or a big estate clear-out with furniture. The higher walls make it slower to load by hand, and a lot of people who order one would have been fine with a 20 and a second haul if needed.

40 yard

Same footprint again, walls about eight feet. New construction, a commercial fit-out or a full demolition. Heavy material in a 40 can exceed the truck's legal weight long before it is full, so it is for bulky, light debris. Rarely the right answer for a house.

How to choose between two sizes

If you are torn, the larger size usually costs less than the second rental you would need with the smaller one. A 20 and a 30 are often only $75 to $150 apart, while a second haul of a 20 can be another few hundred. That logic stops working with heavy material: a bigger container full of shingles just means a bigger overage charge.

Measure what you have in pickup loads if you can. One pickup bed holds about two to three cubic yards when loaded level, so ten pickup loads is a 20 to 30 yard job.

Footprint on a Murfreesboro lot

A 20, 30 or 40 yard needs a space roughly 22 feet long and 8 feet wide, plus room for the truck to line up behind it. In Blackman and the newer subdivisions south of town most driveways take that easily. In the older streets downtown and near MTSU, driveways can be shorter than the container, which is when people start considering the street. A 10 or 15 yard fits in far more places and is sometimes worth choosing for that reason alone.

Common questions

What size dumpster do I need for a roof?

Count the squares (100 square feet of roof each) and the layers. A single layer of 25 to 30 squares, which covers a lot of two-storey subdivision houses here, usually fits a 20 yard by volume. The weight is the real limit, so check the tons included.

Is a 40 yard ever right for a house?

Occasionally, for a full gut or demolition with mostly light material. For most residential jobs it costs more and is harder to load than a 30.

Do all companies carry every size?

No. The 15 yard in particular is missing from some local fleets. If the size you want is not available, the usual compromise is the next size up.

How do I load it so more fits?

Flat pieces first along the floor and walls, broken-down furniture next, loose debris filling the gaps, and nothing above the rim.
