Where the Dumpster Goes: Driveways, Clay and Clearance

What the truck needs
A roll-off truck backs up to the spot, tilts its bed and slides the container off. For the larger sizes it needs a straight run of roughly 60 feet including itself, a width of about 10 to 12 feet, and room overhead to raise the bed, often 20 feet or more. Low limbs, a basketball goal, a carport roof or service wires crossing the drive can all stop a delivery. Look up before the truck arrives, and tell the company about anything overhead when you book.
Protecting a concrete driveway
Most Murfreesboro driveways are concrete and handle a roll-off fine. The load sits on two steel rails, so it is concentrated in two lines. Ask the driver to put boards under the rails, keep the container away from the edges and joints of the slab, and avoid the thin apron near the street. Cracks that were already there can open further, so photograph the drive before delivery.
Asphalt, pavers and decorative concrete
Asphalt softens in July and August heat and can take a dent from the rails. Pavers and stamped or exposed-aggregate concrete are more expensive to repair than plain concrete. On any of these, boards are a must, a smaller container is safer, and on a slope the container should sit where it cannot creep.
Why not the lawn
Rutherford County soils are largely clay over limestone. Clay is hard when dry and soft for days after rain, and the wet months from late fall to spring are when it is worst. A loaded container on a soaked lawn sinks, the truck tears up more ground getting it out, and in a bad case it cannot get it out at all until the ground dries. Grass under a container for a week also dies. If the lawn is the only option, do it in a dry spell with boards or plywood under the rails.
Short driveways and the street
In the older parts of town, downtown, along East Main and near MTSU, some driveways are shorter than a 20 yard container. The options are a smaller container, placing it partly on the drive, or the street. The street means the city's right-of-way, and the permit guide covers when to check with the Engineering Department. Stay clear of hydrants, storm drains and the neighbour's drive whatever the answer.
Not sure your driveway can take a container? Describe it, or send a photo, and the company will say which size fits and where.
Marking the spot
If you will not be home, mark exactly where you want it with a chair or a trash can, move cars out of the way the night before, and unlock any gate. A driver who cannot place the container may leave and charge a trip fee.
Where to go next
Common questions
Will a dumpster crack my driveway?
A sound concrete driveway usually copes. Boards under the rails and keeping off the edges reduce the risk. Existing cracks can widen.
Can it go on gravel?
Yes, if the gravel is well compacted. Loose or new gravel over clay can rut under a loaded container after rain.
How much room do I need?
About 22 feet by 8 feet for a 20 yard or larger, plus a clear approach for the truck and room overhead to tip the bed.
