Ice Storm and Wind Debris: When a Dumpster Makes Sense
Updated 2026-10 · Murfreesboro, TN

What Middle Tennessee storms leave behind
Murfreesboro does not get hurricanes, but it gets ice. The winter storm in late January 2026 coated the area in ice, brought down limbs across Rutherford County, and caused thousands of power outages, most of them from fallen branches. Spring brings severe thunderstorms and the occasional tornado; the county has had damaging ones in several recent years. Each of those leaves the same mess in a yard: broken limbs, sometimes a whole tree, gutters, fencing, shingles and, when water gets in, wet drywall and carpet.
When you may not need a dumpster at all
For tree limbs alone, check what the city is collecting before you rent anything. After the January 2026 storm, the City of Murfreesboro collected tree debris on its regular routes. City brush collection normally has rules about how debris is stacked at the curb and what size pieces are accepted, and those rules are on the city's website. If the only problem is limbs, and you are inside city limits, the curb may be the cheaper answer.
When a dumpster does make sense
- Mixed debris: limbs plus fencing, gutters, a damaged shed or a carport
- Interior damage: wet drywall, insulation, carpet and pad from a leak
- A timeline: you need the yard clear before an insurance adjuster, a sale or a contractor
- You live outside city limits, where city brush pickup does not apply
For limbs and yard debris, a 15 or 20 is usually right. For interior water damage, a 10 or 15 is often enough, but it will be heavy.
Storm debris is heavy and in demand
Wet wood, soaked drywall and carpet weigh much more than the same material dry, so storm loads are the ones most likely to run over the included weight. Cover the container between loads, and ask for more weight included up front if the debris is wet.
After a big storm, every roll-off in the county is booked at once. If you think you will need one, call early, and be ready for a wait of several days. Keep anything a landfill will not take, such as damaged appliances with refrigerant, out of the container.

Placement after a storm
Ground in Rutherford County is often saturated after winter storms, and the clay holds water. Put the container on the driveway, not the lawn, and keep it clear of downed lines and of any limbs still hanging overhead. If a utility line is down anywhere near the drive, the truck should not come until the utility has cleared it.
Insurance
If the debris is part of an insurance claim, photograph everything before it goes in the container, keep the dumpster invoice, and ask your insurer whether debris removal is covered under your policy. Many homeowner policies include some allowance for it.
